| Program Description | Students in this program study a broad base of content and pedagogical knowledge to become skilled teachers in elementary classrooms. They engage in clinical field experiences in area schools at each stage of their education courses, culminating in a student teaching experience. This process allows them to apply for a Minnesota teaching license in grades K-6. In addition, each elementary education major chooses a specialty area to expand his or her expertise to either young children or young adolescents. A pre-primary specialty allows students to work with children age 3 through kindergarten in addition to the K-6 license. A middle school specialty extends the license through eighth grade in a specific content area (math, science, social studies, communication arts and literature, or world languages). A collaborative program between Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) and Normandale Community College offers K-6 preparation, with three areas of middle school (5-8) specialty offered on site: Mathematics, Science, and Communication Arts and Literature. |
