Funding for Student Organization Activities

In support of programming by Recognized Student Organizations, money has been allotted by the Minnesota State Student Association. To be considered for funding by the Student Allocations Committee (S.A.C.), student organizations must be recognized by M.S.S.A. and be classified as an independent student organization or a department affiliated organization (receives less than $500 per year from the sponsoring department). The Committee will hear presentations  the funding requests. The Committee will then approve or disapprove program funding based in part on the following criteria:

  1. The event's ability to enhance the cultural, educational, social, or recreational development of students, not currently available through other areas;
  2. The ability of the organization to successfully sponsor the event based on past performance;
  3. The membership, viability, and demonstrated need of the eligible student organization;
  4. The number of people potentially served by the event;
  5. The ability of the event to attract an audience;
  6. The manner in which the program or activity addresses a unique situation in the student body.

For more information, contact Student Activities, SU 173, 507-389-6076.

Kessel Peace Institute

Department of Political Science/Law Enforcement
507-389-6938

The Kessel Peace Institute is dedicated to advancing the understanding and the existence of peace at all levels, from the individual to the global community. The Institute defines peace in its broadest sense, denoting not only the absence of conflict, but also the interrelationship of the factors necessary to create or to enhance harmony within and among human beings and their environments.

The Kessel Peace Institute is named after Abbas Kessel, a Minnesota State Mankato Political Science professor for 19 years and life-long peace activist. The Institute affirms Kessel's insistence that for peace to be possible the values, behaviors, and conditions essential for positive human relations must exist at multiple levels: including the personal, local, regional, national, and international communities.

A Program Committee coordinates the activities of the Kessel Peace Institute. The committee raises funds through the KISPC Endowment, develops policy recommendations for the Institute, sets budgets, oversees activities, and evaluates outcomes. The Committee works through the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences on all matters pertaining to the operation and administration of the Institute.

The Institute pursues four organizational components to support a variety of activities. These activities include the sponsorship of seminars and workshops, public lectures, artistic and cultural presentations, and other school-and community-based activities.

Like Kessel himself, the work of the Institute will reflect a multi-disciplinary approach, erasing artificial boundaries that separate various scholarly traditions, teaching and learning, research and practice, and the campus and the larger community.
