Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival

Each academic year, the Department enters most of its plays for response from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) and actively participates in the Region V Festival. Traditionally, MSU has the greatest number of Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship nominations, actively participates in Costume Parade and other design competitions, both for faculty and students, and enters in play writing competitions. When possible, the Department also enters a show as a Participating Production, which could lead to performance at the Regional or National festivals. By providing up to 14 students the opportunity to compete in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition, we heighten student involvement and take it to the next level. Finalist and Semi-Finalists at the Regional competition, which includes upwards of 400 participants, gains them unofficial "All-American Actor" status. MSU historically has from three to six Semi-Finalists and one or more Finalists each January. In January 2005, five of sixteen MSU Irene Ryan nominees were named Semi-Finalists; two were Finalists; one was named First Alternate in Region V; either Certificates of Meritorious Achievement were received; showcased costumes from Volpone; student-written one-act play was selected for reading; costume designer for Brezhnev's Children received an Honorable Mention from the Barbizon Design Award judges.
