Twelfth Night
Jan. 28-31 & Feb. 3-7, 2010
Directed by Heather E. Hamilton

FOR THE AUDITION

Please prepare a one minute monologue from Shakespeare or one of his contemporaries. This is a funny,
charming, light-hearted play (with a mean streak). I will be looking for people who are obviously
having fun with the language. There will be some gender blind casting of smaller roles.

Character breakdown
Viola: Young aristocratic woman. She is shipwrecked in Illyria and, believing herself alone in the world, disguises herself
as a man and gains employment in Orsino’s court. She is smart, mischievous, romantic, and spunky.

Olivia: The beautiful heiress with whom Orsino is in love. She is proud and vain but charming, nevertheless. She falls
in love with Viola, believing her to be a man from Orsino’s court. She is elegant and passionate.

Maria: Olivia’s pretty, saucy waiting-gentlewoman. She orchestrates the plot against Malvolio, and is mischievous and fun.

Orsino: A nobleman in love with the Lady Olivia. He is in love with his own melancholy.

Sebastian: Viola’s twin brother. When he appears in the play, all Illyrians believe he is Viola. He is a good fighter
and an impulsive young man. He happily marries Olivia, even though he has never met her before.

Malvolio: Olivia’s prudish servant. He is a priss and tries to ruin everyone’s fun, and so is mocked severely by the clowns
in the play. Large tricks are played on him, and even at the end of the play he is the brunt of many jokes.

Feste: The fool. He knows everything but plays dumb. A singer.

Sir Toby: Olivia’s uncle and a country drunk. He ultimately marries Maria after falling in love with her mischief.
He plays mean and funny tricks on Malvolio.

Sir Andrew Aguecheek: A foppish and sickly man, and a dear friend of Sir Toby. He is a suitor of Olivia and
challenges Viola to a duel for her hand.

Antonio: The dear friend of Sebastian.

Valentine: A gentleman attending on the Duke.

Curio: A Gentleman attending on the Duke.

Fabian: Servant to Olivia.

A Sea Captain: Friend to Viola.

Servant: to Olivia/Officer of the law: This actor will play both roles.

Officer of the Law/ Priest: This actor will play both roles.
