MSU Trailers - Checkout of MSU Trailers used by Passenger Fleet customers.
- Passenger Fleet trailer size shall be no more that 8' in length. You must complete a separate reservation for a Minnesota State Mankato's 7 passenger state minivan and a MSU 8' trailer.
- Personal vehicles or Minnesota State Mankato's 12 passenger vans are not permitted to be attached to our state 8' trailer.
- No trailers other than a Minnesota State Mankato's trailer may be attached to a MSU vehicle.
- Safety features for 8' trailers include safety feet to stabilized the trailer as people load and unload; and built-in E-track and/or D-rings with belts are to be used to secure cargo.
- Limits on Trailer Contents.
Trailers were purchased to augment the Passenger Fleet allowing customers to store luggage and presentation displays that otherwise would tie up passenger space in a sedan or minivan. (It is recognized that such materials present an airborne hazard if the sedan or minivan stop suddenly or an accident occurs.) Trailers cannot be used to transport commodities that otherwise are routinely delivered by common commercial carriers like trucking companies. Minnesota State Mankato's Receiving and Delivery Services, (389-1519) can be contacted to see if they would haul the materials to a given site, or if they would assist in finding a commercial carrier to ship the materials in question. The University reserves the right to refuse trailer reservations when the commodities and items being transported are hazardous, raise safety concerns, or exceed the load restrictions, or could cause internal damage to the trailer's walls, ceiling, or floor.
- All trailers shall be attached to Minnesota State Mankato's passenger minivans by a MSU garage mechanic in the presence of minivan driver so they clearly understand how the hitches work, understand safety features of the connections, and understand the language on exterior signage. The Trailer Usage Guideline form should be signed by the driver.
- A "Trailer Usage Guidelines" form contains a check list which shall be reviewed and signed by the customer. The check list addresses these requirements for the driver:
- Reduce speed while traveling with trailer.
- Utilize wider turns to allow proper trailer turns.
- Avoid stopping abruptly.
- Be aware of road conditions – ice and wind may cause "fishtailing" especially at higher speeds.
- Periodically check lights, and hitch hook-up throughout the trip.
- Use side mirrors at all times.
- Before vehicle and attached trailer are released to customer, require driver(s) to demonstrate their ability to maneuver van (with trailer attached) to the satisfaction of a MSU garage mechanic.
- A flat rate of $16 per trip shall be charged.
