An Evening with Chief Wilma Mankiller

The Women's Center and the Department of Women's Studies are pleased to announce that the third annual Carol Ortman Perkins Lectureship will be "An Evening with Chief Wilma Mankiller."

  • When: Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at 7:00 p.m.
  • Where: Centennial Student Union Ballroom at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Wilma Mankiller served for ten years (1985-1995) as first female Principal Chief of the 220,000-member Cherokee Nation. She has been an activist involved in Native American rights since 1969, newly politicized by the native occupation of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. Her areas of expertise include community development, economic stimulation, public relations, tribal governance, education, leadership, writing, and the conceptualization and development of an extensive array of projects ranging from basic infrastructure to programs for children and youth. Since stepping down as Chief, she has been devoting her energy to the rights of Native Americans and women. Chief Mankiller is also the author of several books including:

Mankiller: A Chief and Her People, and The Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History. In 1998, President Bill Clinton awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Imagine living in a state where 25% of violent crime victims have been attacked in their own homes by intimates*. Unfortunately, we're living there right now, and we need to reevaluate our status quo. Connect with students and faculty from the Sociology Department in their student-run Domestic Violence Conference to learn about topics related to gender and family violence, elder abuse, date rape on college campuses, and many other important themes.
