The Conference has been initiated by Vicki Hunter's students in the Sociology department. The students are facilitating important panel-driven discussions on several topics that are critical to the current family violence discourse. There will be a noon Keynote speaker, Shawn MacRae, domestic violence advocate and professor of Sociology. We will be providing food during the noon Keynote for those who wish to eat lunch. For those who want lunch, you must register and pay the $5.00 lunch fee (registration is available 10am-2pm at a table in the CSU lobby area near Ostrander, Monday-Wednesday of this week; otherwise you may register in the Women's Center). October 9th, 7:00 p.m. Ostrander Auditorium MSU Gay or straight... Windmeyer opens the closet door that traditionally keeps students silenced on issues surrounding sexual orientation. He combines humor and his own personal experience to destroy stereotypes that perpetuate homophobia and sheds light on an often invisible segment of the college community— our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. This program aims to educate and enlighten audience members on LGBT issues as well as motivate individuals to take the next step in coming out as visible allies and leaders for all people- including LGBT people.
October 11th 7 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium MSU An array of new and past entertainers will grace MSU with their presences during the annual Gender Bender drag performance hosted by the Minnesota State, Mankato Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center during National Coming Out Week. The annual event draws a capacity crowd and is expected to do so once again. This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:45pm and seats are expected to fill quickly. A reception, sponsored by the MSU Women's Center, will be held in the LGBT Center following the Gender Bender drag show. Refreshments will be provided and audience members will be able to meet the performers.
Coming Out of the Closets Clothes Drive October 9th - 13th MSU Centennial Student Union sage will be collecting clothes to donate to local charities during National Coming Out Week. Raid your closets and bring in those clothes you don't wear anymore! New clothes are also appreciated! Specific needs include: new women's underwear, pajamas, and bras without underwires. You can drop clothes off at the LGBT Center, the Women's Center, and in the Mav Ave all week.

Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9:30-5 at Loyola High School is a conference for persons who have connections with people who might be at risk as they are feeling depressed, our of sorts, troubled etc. It is for those who see others around them they wish they had more tools to be able to help them. There are tremendous speakers involved. Scholarships are available. Professor Lisa Heldke will be speaking in the Department of Philosophy's Colloquium Series on "Culinary Travel and the Search for the 'Genuine Article,'" an exploration of the ways that "new flavors threaten — or promise — to challenge our very boundaries." Dr. Heldke, who teaches philosophy and women's studies at Gustavus Adolphus College, has published numerous works in the growing area of Philosophy of Food, including the book Exotic Appetites: Ruminations of a Food Adventurer(2003) and Cooking, Eating, Thinking: Transformative Philosophies of Food as co-editor (1992). The talk will be on Wednesday, October 18 at 4:00 in 215 Armstrong Hall. All are welcome.
There's a new feminist group on campus! Three first-year Women's Studies graduate students—Jen Parks, Katie Bowman, and Kim Burrow—have recognized a need for a new feminist activist group at MSU, and they've formed an executive board to help initiate innovative activist ideas on campus! Feminism in Action believes the following mission statement will help root their activism with informed multiplicity of perspectives:
Tonight's Feminism in Action meeting will take place following the LGBT Center's event with Shane L. Windmeyer's OUTSPOKEN: Coming out as an ally at the Ostrander Auditorium (this event starts at 7pm). Feminism in Action will be tabling at the event starting at 6:30pm prior to the event; come visit us at our table and join us at our meeting following the event! We anticipate that our meeting will begin at 8:30 following the end of OUTSPOKEN. The meeting will be in the Women's Center, CSU 218.
