Annual Asian Pacific American Conference at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Minnesota State University, Mankato's Asian American Affairs Program presents its Annual Asian Pacific American Conference. The conference will be held on October 20-21, 2006 in its Centennial Student Union.

This year's theme of "Sharing Our Stories, Uniting our Communities " features keynote speakers: Dr. H. L. Tran, CEO & President of Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum; Dr. Erika Lee, historian, immigration specialist and author of "At America's Gates: Chinese Immigration During the Exclusion Era" and Chong Kim, Survivor, Educator and Advocate for ending human trafficking.

Feminism in Action

There's a new feminist group on campus! Join the members of Feminism in Action for their meeting next Monday to discuss semester activism ideas! We will be reviewing a list of ideas developed at our first meeting, ranging from an all-size swim event (focus on body image) to a protest at the Mankato Birthright clinic (focus on pro-choice); bring your thoughts and opinions to help us narrow our list. Everyone is welcome. Monday's (Oct 23) Feminism in Action meeting will take place at 8 p.m. in the Women's Center. Please join us for fun and innovation. Speaker on "How to Vote"

October 26th, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. in Armstrong 325 Joseph Kunkel will be speaking on "How to Vote." It will be a basic introduction to learn how to register as a voter, where you should vote, and how to get a ballot for absentees. It is a great experience for anyone who wants to vote on November 7th or anyone who may be confused on the process.

The Conference has been initiated by Vicki Hunter's students in the Sociology department. The students are facilitating important panel-driven discussions on several topics that are critical to the current family violence discourse. There will be a noon Keynote speaker, Shawn MacRae, domestic violence advocate and professor of Sociology. We will be providing food during the noon Keynote for those who wish to eat lunch. For those who want lunch, you must register and pay the $5.00 lunch fee (registration is available 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at a table in the CSU lobby area near Ostrander, Monday-Wednesday of this week; otherwise you may register in the Women's Center). International Poetry Recital

All faculty and students are invited to attend and participate in the International Poetry Recital that will take place on November 14, as part of Diversity - International Education Week. We are especially encouraging faculty and students from other countries to recite poems in their native language.   1. The whole poem. (if it is not in English, please provide the English translation, published or your own. It does not need to be perfect!)
  2. Your name, country of origin, and language in which you will be reciting Please e-mail your poem by November 3. If there is any poem duplication, you might be asked to change your selection.
