Feminism in Action

There's a new feminist group on campus! Join the members of Feminism in Action for their meeting next Monday to discuss semester activism ideas! We will be reviewing a list of ideas developed at our first meeting, ranging from an all-size swim event (focus on body image) to a protest at the Mankato Birthright clinic (focus on pro-choice); bring your thoughts and opinions to help us narrow our list. Everyone is welcome. Monday's (Oct 23) Feminism in Action meeting will take place at 8 p.m. in the Women's Center. Please join us for fun and innovation. Speaker on "How to Vote"

October 26th, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. in Armstrong 325 Joseph Kunkel will be speaking on "How to Vote." It will be a basic introduction to learn how to register as a voter, where you should vote, and how to get a ballot for absentees. It is a great experience for anyone who wants to vote on November 7th or anyone who may be confused on the process.

Why: To draw public awareness towards the Track the Truth Campaign and its efforts to highlight the financial and safety concerns of the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad's (DM&E) coal train expansion project. The campaign reaches out to local communities along the rail line to create dialog, educate and gain understanding of how this controversial project will impact patient care at the Mayo Clinic, the environment, and quality of life. The Conference has been initiated by Vicki Hunter's students in the Sociology department. The students are facilitating important panel-driven discussions on several topics that are critical to the current family violence discourse. There will be a noon Keynote speaker, Shawn MacRae, domestic violence advocate and professor of Sociology. We will be providing food during the noon Keynote for those who wish to eat lunch. For those who want lunch, you must register and pay the $5.00 lunch fee (registration is available 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at a table in the CSU lobby area near Ostrander, Monday-Wednesday of this week; otherwise you may register in the Women's Center). Sociological Discussion

When: November 16th, 2006
Where: CSU 204 from 12:00 p.m.- 1:00 p.m.

Discussion dealing with sterilization and contraception...of women. In this discussion is a threeway panel with the representatives: -Vicki Hunter, a Sociology Professor who specializes in Family, Gender, Social Policy, and Stratification; Lori Marti, a Health Educator with the Student Health Services; and Chera Sevcik, a Community Health Major who is interning at the Women's Center and focusing on Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health. This will bring forth three perspectives on the topic: a Sociological Perspective, a General Health Perspective, and an indepth Women's Reproductive and Sexual Health Perspective.
