Take Back the Night 2007

Throughout its history, Take Back the Night has inspired both women and men to confront sexual violence. The unifying theme is the assertion that all human beings have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard: the right to take back the night! In short, to Take Back the Night means reclaiming the fears the night has instilled in women and survivors. Each year, MSU commits one night in April to Take Back the Night as a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

When and Where

  • Monday, April 30
  • 7:15 p.m.: Poetry reading on lawn in front of Performing Arts Center, followed by March/Rally through campus
  • 8:00 p.m.: Scheduled Speakers, Open Mic, and food/refreshments in CSU 253/4/5.

This event is free and open to all.

Show your support for survivors of sexual violence, your commitment to ending sexual violence, your call to action, and your willingness to Take Back the Night! For more information, contact Lindsay at lindsay.gullingsrud@mnsu.edu or 507-389-5127.

Poets Wanted!

Are you interested in contributing to the Women's Center's 2007 Take Back the Night? If so, read on!

As a part of MSU's 2007 Take Back the Night, we will be having a poetry reading that will pertain to sexual violence and empowerment. Poetry should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Discuss issues related in some way to sexual violence, feminism, empowerment, activism about violence, ownership of one's body, having a voice or being silenced, reclaiming (taking back) the night, surviving violence.
  • Respect that there will be multiple survivors of sexual violence present, so please use your careful discretion to respect multiple people's perspectives on their experiences surviving sexual violence when selecting your poetry submissions.
  • Each author can submit up to 3 submissions of short poetry, or 1 long poem.
  • The Take Back the Night organizational committee will review poetry for its sensitivity to our audience and appropriateness to our themes.
  • Poets whose poetry is submitted and accepted by the committee can choose to read their own poetry in our Take Back the Night poetry reading event, or can choose to have somebody else read their poetry (we can help find a reader).

Deadline for submissions: Monday, April 23, Noon, in Women's Center (CSU 218) (or via email to katherine.bowman@mnsu.edu)
