Where Learning and Weather Come Together

The Lab

WALTER LabLocated in the basement of Armstrong Hall, on the campus of Minnesota State University, WALTER is one of the premier weather education facilities in the Northern Plains. With the help of our Sponsors, and MSU, WALTER is home to several high-end computers loaded with state-of-the-science weather analysis software. Students at MSU have the opportunity to not only learn about weather in the classroom, but also have the tools to gain hands on experience of real time weather. WALTER also offers students a comfortable study area with numerous computers for any sort of scientific analysis.

History behind WALTER

Old WALTER LabIn 1988, a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and matching funds form Minnesota State University enabled MSU's Weather Analysis Laboratory (WAL) to come into being. Through the following decade, much of the weather equipment become weather beaten, obsolete and expensive to maintain. In 1998, with the aid of another matching grant from NSF and MSU, a leap forward in technoloy was provided and the WALTER facility emerged. WALTER also benefited by inveestments and donatiions from several companies including: Northern Video Graphics, Meteorologix, Wind Logics. IPS-Meteostar, Texas Insturments, and several other companies who supplied customized software and hardware systems for display and teaching demonstrations. All together, they have enabled the creation of a state-of-the-science weather facility for teaching and educational resouces.
