Physical Health

Water Workout Wonders

  • When: September 19, Noon, September 25, 4:30pm
  • Who: All Faculty, Staff, and Students
  • Where: PH 102 (aerobics room) for Noon classes HC 1700 for 4:30pm classes
  • Did you know that working out in water gives your body 12 times the resistance of working out on land? Working out in the water is no/low impact and refreshing! Expand your fitness horizon by engaging in learning this new way to be active! Find out all the benefits of water. Getting in the water is optional. No registration needed. Brown Bag Trivia

  • Stimulate your mind with our trivia questions and win prizes while eating your lunch. Bring your own bag lunch. No registration needed. Come for part or all of it!

Treasure Hunt

  • Thursday, September 28, 11:30-1:00
  • Who: Faculty and Staff
  • Where: Employee Wellness Committee table near the fountain Yo-ho-ho!
  • Get a refreshing October walk while gathering clues around campus. Find the treasure chest and take home your reward! Come anytime between 11:30am and 1pm.Please email jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu by Wednesday, September 27 if you plan on attending.

Smoking Cessation Program

  • When: Wednesday, October 4, 11am-1pm CSU 244
  • Takes approximately 20 minutes. The University of Minnesota is offering an opportunity for current smokers to enroll in a state-of-the-art quit smoking program. As a participant, you will receive the following: FREE nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges without the need to visit your doctor, FREE counseling over the phone scheduled to accommodate your schedule, and $25 for each data collection phone call (up to $150). Family Weekend 5k Fun Run/Walk

  • When: Saturday, October 14, 8:30am
  • Where: Behind Gage Complex
  • Who: MSU faculty, staff, students, and families
  • First 150 registrants receive a free MSU 5k t-shirt. Bagels and fruit at the finish line! To receive a t-shirt, register by calling campus recreation at 3269.

Fall Color Walks

  • Where: Meet at Fountain
  • Refresh your mind and body during a 30-minute walk. Meet new people while enjoying the beautiful red, yellow, and orange hues of Autumn.

Body Composition Analysis

  • When: October 26, October 27
  • Where: CSU
  • Cost: $5
  • Get a quick and informative analysis that will include: body fat %, body water %, muscle mass, physique rating, visceral fat, bone mass, metabolic age, and basal metabolic rate. Limited number of these 10- minute appointments available. Email jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu to schedule your time.

Race Against Yourself Fall Fitness Challenge

  • This event is for both beginning walkers and avid runners! Walk, stroll, jog, or run at one of the events in October. Try to beat your time on the same course in November. Spend the colorful month training on your own or attending our lunch-hour fitness opportunities. If you beat your time by at least 10 seconds, you will be entered into our drawing for several excellent prizes! *Bonus Opportunity: attend the Family Weekend 5k Run/Walk on 10/14 and receive an additional drawing entry!

Great American Smoke Out Email Countdown

  • When: October 12 - November 16
  • Nominate yourself or a friend to receive a weekly motivational email from the Employee Wellness Committee with tips and facts to help quit smoking. Emails will lead up to the Great American Smoke Out on November 16, where those on the list have a chance to exchange their cigarettes or lighters for a cold turkey sandwich! Weight Watchers

  • When: Starting the week of October 16th, 2006 and ending the week of January 22, 2007, 12:00
  • Where: MSU Campus
  • Cost: $144 for 13 fun-filled meetings
  • Lose weight while you work! Join the MSU Weight Watchers at Work program which will include weekly meetings, program materials, and confidential weigh-ins. 13 meetings over a 15-week period. Contact jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu by 10/12 if you are interested. Must have 20 people interested to set up the program.

Eldercare: Tips on the “Tough Stuff” of Aging and Caregiving

  • Back by popular demand, this hour-long discussion with speaker Shirley Murray will include tips on communicating with loved ones, getting what is needed from the health care system, and taking care of yourself while taking care of others. Great American Smokeout

  • Quit smoking for a day! Exchange your cigarettes or lighters for a FREE and delicious cold turkey sandwich. FYI: Did you know that this nationwide event started in Monticello, Minnesota in 1974? Soon after, it was picked up by the American Cancer Association. Show your Minnesota pride and take part!

Managing Holiday Stress

  • ‘Tis the season to be jolly! Improve your outlook on the holiday season by learning to prevent and cope with stress in your life. Chair Massages

  • Wednesday, November 29, 11am-1pm $5/person for 15 minute massage
  • Treat yourself to relaxation during your workday. Students from Sister Rosalind’s School of Massage will be on campus offering a limited number of 15minute chair massages for a discounted rate. Email jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu to make an appointment.

Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program

  • November 11 - 30th, 2006
  • Did you know your old athletic shoes can be turned into basketball and tennis courts, running tracks and athletic fields? Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program recycles your old shoes by grinding the rubber soles into playing surfaces that are donated to communities around the world. Take a moment to help others be active by donating any athletic shoes with soft rubber soles to Wigley 336 (Human Resources Office).
  • The first 30 donators will get to pick something out of our prize chest!

Cookbook Recipe Collection

  • November 1st - 30th, 2006
  • The Employee Wellness Committee is making a cookbook and needs your healthy recipes. If you drop off 3 recipes that we determine can be used in our cookbook, you will receive a free copy of the MSU Healthy Recipe Book this spring. Email jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu your recipes by 11/30.

Yoga

  • Wednesdays, November 8 - December 13, 12pm-12:45pm, PH 102 $5/person
  • Calm yourself as you prepare for the busy holiday season with a dynamite 6-week yoga series for faculty and staff with yoga instructor Bryan Gerber. Cost includes all six sessions. Limit is 30. Email jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu to reserve your spot.
