  • The Employee Wellness Committee’s spring semester yoga instructor is Honey Stempka, a current graduate student at Minnesota State Mankato in the experiential education program. Prior to becoming involved with the experiential education field in 2001, Honey was an exercise physiologist, personal trainer and group exercise instructor in Florida and Pennsylvania. She has a BS in Exercise Science and a BA in Dance from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.

Writing to Soldiers Brown Bag Lunch

Mount Kato

  • 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • Minnesota State Mankato family night at Mount Kato. Discounted lift and rental rates.
  • All employees are invited to bring their families and guests to Mount Kato on Friday, February 9th for an evening of snow tubing, skiing, or snowboarding.
  • Lessons are available.
  • To sign up and obtain release forms, contact graduate assistant Jenni Mead.

  • All payments and forms must be received by Monday, February 5th.

Salsa Dancing

  • Learn the basics of Salsa dancing during your lunch hour! You do not need to bring a partner! MSU student and Salsa instructor Zachary Bohlman, who has been performing Latin style dancing for three years, says “most people are able to demonstrate the basic style within 15 minutes of practice. After that, the style of the dance is to make up your own moves and incorporate your own style.” Please e-mail jennifer.mead@mnsu.edu if you plan on attending so we may properly prepare for the number of people.

A swing dancing lesson with Steve Mayer

  • Monday, February 26, 2007
  • Grab a date and learn beginning swing dance moves on Monday, February 26 in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom . Professional dance instructor Steve Mayer will introduce MSU employees and their dates to this fun and social form of exercise. People with two left feet are welcome!
  • Come to the ballroom at 7:45 p.m. The hour-long lesson will start at 8p.m. Directly following the lesson, the MSU Swing Dancing Club will dance for us and show us their best moves, and you are welcome to stay after and join them for their club dance!
  • Contact the Wellness Committee to register.
  • Cost is $8/couple.
  • Payment is needed by Monday, February 19, 2007.

Treadmills are more than just walking in place! Find out numerous ways to vary your workout and keep your body (and mind!) challenged while you are waiting for spring. Please bring walking shoes if you want to use a treadmill.

Smoking Cessation Program

  • When: Tuesday, March 27, 11am-1pm CSU 201
  • Takes approximately 20 minutes for enrollment procedures. The University of Minnesota is offering an opportunity for current smokers to enroll in a state-of-the-art quit smoking program. As a participant, you will receive the following: FREE nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges without the need to visit your doctor, FREE counseling over the phone scheduled to accommodate your schedule, and $25 for each data collection phone call (up to $150).   • A fun and informal way to explore wellness! Discuss books centered on various health topics. Bring your own book and lunch. Drawings for themed door prizes at each meeting!
  • February’s book will be Icebound: A Doctor’s Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole, by Dr. Jerri Nielsen. The story about a doctor who stayed a dark winter at the Amundson-Scott South Pole Station on Antarctica. After discovering a lump in her breast, she began chemotherapy treatments on herself until she could be rescued four months later.
  • Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression, by Brooke Shields. A story about a condition that is widely misunderstood, despite the fact that it affects one in ten new mothers.
