Spring Semester 2008 Events

January 2007

  • Spring Yoga begins Monday January 14th
    • Mixed Level Yoga (Beginners and up)
    • Mondays and Wednesdays 12 pm to 12:45 pm.
    • Beginning January 14th and running through April 30th  (except for the week of spring break and on MLK Jr. Day).
    • Classes will be held in PH 102. $2 a class for drop-ins, $30 in advance for one time a week or save and pay $49 in advance for two times a week. Fifteen weeks total.
    • Taught by graduate student Tasha Purcell.
    • No need to register in advance, just show up and bring a friend. We’ll provide the mats.
  • Book Club Brown Bag - Tuesday, January 29th
    • Need a good book to read over break? We’ve got one for you.
    • 1000 Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is the must read follow up to the 2005 bestseller The Kite Runner.
    • We’ll meet Tuesday, January 29th in CSU 204 from 12 pm to 1 pm to discuss. Don’t forget to bring your lunch!
  • Mt. Kato Night, Friday, February 8th
    • Bring the family out for a night of fun on the slopes. Please send name, number attending, contact info, rental needs and a check made out to MSU Wellness and send to Graham Prather WA 336 by January 31st to be eligible for the group rate. Unfortunately, late registration will not be available.
    • Lift tickets $14,
    • Ski or snowboard rental $13,
    • Beginner lessons $3,
    • Snowblade rental $25 (prices are per person for all ages).
    • Arrive between 4 pm and 6 pm and check in at the MSU table just inside the chalet to pick up your lift tickets. Mt. Kato closes at 10 pm.
    • Bonus: Every employee who registers will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of lift tickets to be used at anytime during this ski season. Need not be present to win.

  • First Aid/CPR, Saturday, February 16th (4 hours) by Jen Myers
    • Be Safe! Be Prepared! Be a Good Citizen!
    • Saturday, February 16th, 9 am to 1 pm. $20 registration fee.
    • Minimum of 4 people, maximum of 12.
    • Please register with Jennifer Myers at 389.3269 or by e-mail jennifer.myers@mnsu.edu by February 11th to reserve your spot.
  • Massages by Sister Rosalind - Friday, February 29th
    • All the spots have been filled - thanks for signing up!
    • Back by popular demand! 15 minute massages for $5
    • Massage Therapy students will be on campus Friday, February 29th from 11 am to 1 pm in CSU 253. A fifteen minute massage will cost you only $5.
    • To register for a time slot please contact graham.prather@mnsu.edu by February 15th.

  • Weight Watchers
    • Option 1
      • Mondays from Noon to 1pm with group leader Robin Hattey. These meetings will begin Monday, February 18th and run for 15 weeks at a cost of $180.
    • Option 2
      • Leader Toya Schmidtke (one of Minnesota State Mankato own employees)
      • Meetings will be held in Carkoski Commons Conference room inside of room #100, on Tuesdays, starting February 26th at 4:30pm and will run for 17 weeks.
      • Please contact graham.prather@mnsu.edu if you are interested or have any questions and please pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested!
  • Employee Wellness Committee Meeting, February 29th 1:30-2:30 pm CSU 202
    • Open to those with an interest in promoting employee wellness at MSU, Mankato.
    • We welcome you to join us with your suggestions, ideas and feedback.

March 2008

  • Mt. Kato Family Ski Night Saturday March 1st  
    • March Madness at Mt. Kato is a great deal for you and your family.
    • Please send registration form , including contact info, rental needs, signed waiver forms for each individual and a check made out to MSU Wellness to Graham Prather WA 336 by February 25th to be eligible for the group rate.

  • Family Pool Party Sunday March 2nd, 4-6 pm,
    • FREE!! Get out of the house and into a more tropical mindset.
    • We’ll have the MSU, Mankato Pool located in Campus Rec available for employees and their guests.
    • We’ll provide the lifeguard, fruity beverages, snacks, prizes and the Beach Boys music, you bring your family and towels, sunscreen not required.
    • To ensure we have enough snacks and drinks for everyone, please email graham.prather@mnsu.edu by February 27th if you plan on attending.
  • Intro to Pilates Postponed until possibly April 2008
    • With instructor Elizabeth Harsma.
    • Cost will be only $2 a class and depending on interest and attendance this program may be extended and expanded upon.
    • **A reminder to our Yoga participants that we will not have class during Spring Break, so this is the perfect time to give pilates a try.
  • Are You Label Able? March 20th, 12-1 pm CSU 203
    • Become a smart shopper by reading food labels. 
    • Have you wondered what is important on a label? 
    • Which nutrients should I have more or less of? 
    • This class will offer specific tips and guidelines to help you be a successful label reader and succeed in picking healthier foods.
    • Join us to sort through the information and give you the tools to make healthy food choices that meet your nutritional goals.
    • Taught by Rebecca Gruenes, our own MSU Nutrition Health Educator.

  • Wellness Softball Team, register by March 23rd
    • The Wellness Program is sponsoring an intramural team here on campus.
    • We'll pick up the $30 registration fee.
    • We need at least 10 (5 of which need to be women, co-ed rules).

  • An Ounce of Prevention and a Pound of Cure: The Three D's of Identity Theft Protection
    • April 3rd 12:00-1:00 pm in CSU 201
    • Don't be a con artist's dream! Learn what can be done to protect yourself from identity theft and what to do if it happens to you.
    • LSS FCS is celebrating their 20th anniversary of serving Minnesota residents with confidential budgeting and debt management services, credit report reviews, housing counseling, financial literacy and educational presentations.
    • Presenter: Julie Zachariason, Program Coordinator LSS Financial Counseling Service (LSS FCS).

  • Stress Reduction: Tried and True Behavioral Self-Management Techniques
    • April 10th 12:00-1:00 pm in CSU 203
    • Stressing with work or school? Wondering when you'll ever find the time to get things done? Does loss of sleep hinder your productivity? This presentation will explain simple, yet powerful, techniques to help deal with issues of anxiety, stress, sleep deprivation, and time management.
    • All techniques are supported with empirically-based research in behavioral psychology.
    • Techniques reviewed:
      • Deep Breathing;
      • Visualization;
      • Progressive Muscle Relaxation;
      • Time Management and Goal Setting;
      • Sleep;
      • Hygiene.
    • Presenter: Joe Wanzek, MSU graduate student in Clinical Psychology and intern in the MSU Counseling Center.

  • Spring Challenge Kicks Off April 4th
    • Weekly Points
    • The Minnesota State University, Mankato Employee Wellness Committee’s three-week health challenge, Groove Your Health, begins on April 4th. This year’s challenge will focus on physical activity, diet, and sleep. All MSU faculty and staff are invited to take part in this exciting program.
    • Everyone who participates will be invited to a free lunch reception in CSU 253-255 on Friday, April 25th from 11:30 am-12:30 pm, where awards and over 100 door prizes will be handed out from 12:30-1:00pm.    
    • Make sure to climb the stairs, exercise during your lunch hour, and hold walking meetings so that you may end up with a groovy prize!  
    • Groove your Health participants will keep track of their total daily minutes of activity, water consumption, servings of fruits, vegetables, and fiber, and hours of sleep. Each week, participants will report their points to their team captain. The average points of each team will be posted on the Wellness website weekly.
    • Two opportunities for bonus points will be available each week. One will be a habit, such as not drinking pop. The second will be to attend at least one Wellness Committee event during the week that will be posted on our website and sent out via email to team captains.  
    • Get 3-8 people together and form a team! If you do not have a team, we will help you find one.

  • Intro to Pilates

    • Two introductory classes to Pilates will be offered to employees.
    • Taught by instructor Elizabeth Harsma, cost is only $2 per class.

  • Family Climbing Tower Afternoon
    • Friday, April 18th
    • (Original times published have changed to 4:30-6:30 and it is no longer 4-7 pm.)
    • Bring yourself and family (ages 10 and up ) out to the MSU ropes course (Near the Andreas Observatory, behind Gage Hall) for an afternoon on the climbing tower, Friday, April 18th stop by between 4:30-6:30.
    • Liability Release forms should be signed prior to arrival and can be found here: http://ed.mnsu.edu/adventure/forms/
    • This will be cancelled in the event of rain during the time slot.

    • Parking is available near the ropes course for participants.

    • You don’t have to be participating in the “Groove Your Health” team challenge to come.

  • Healthy Cooking Demo
    • April 24th - 12-1pm
    • Learn healthful tips on how to modify recipes to make them lower in fat and calories in both cooking and baking. There will be quick and easy meal demonstrations with available samples to try.  Join us to discuss some fast and lean meal ideas and also how to stock your kitchen for quick meals.

  • Y Shape Up Challenge April 27th - May 25th
    • The wellness program will cover the cost of registration.
    • These teams do not have to be the same team as it is for the Groove Your Health challenge.
    • If you need more details concerning the YMCA challenge, they can be found at http://mankato.yshapeup.com.
    • To register a team, have only the team captain email graham.prather@mnsu.edu with a list of team members, a team name, and a username and password for your team (in order to access the Y’s website) no later than noon on Thursday April 24th.
    • We’ll be competing against other business in Mankato…
