Medical Dental Expense Accounts

You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for a program to stop smoking. However, you cannot include in medical expenses amounts you pay for drugs that do not require a prescription, such as nicotine gum or patches, that are designed to help stop smoking.

Motivation to stop smoking?

Smoking causes more deaths in the U.S. than AIDS, automobile accidents, homicides, suicides, drug overdoses and fires combined.

If you smoke one pack of cigarettes a day and pay $4 a pack, you could save $1,460 in one year when you quit.

Within 20 minutes of your last cigarette:

  • Your blood pressure drops to normal
  • Pulse rate drops to normal rate

Within 24 hours:

  • Chance of heart attack decreases

Within 48 hours:

  • Nerve endings in the mouth and nose start to re-grow
