About UsPage address: https://www.mnsu.edu/activities/jumpstart/about.html
Jumpstart pairs highly-trained college students with preschool children in early learning programs for one-to-one tutoring in school readiness skills. Jumpstart provides a high-quality, comprehensive program that focuses on the development of the child, his or her family, and the college student serving as an AmeriCorps member.
Through these three program areas:
- school success,
- family involvement &
- future teachers,
Jumpstart works to create an environment of life-long learning for children. Jumpstart builds school success, family involvement and future teachers...one child at a time.
Jumpstart Mankato is a local affiliate site of Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc. We are not just housed at Minnesota State University, Mankato, but are now an integral part of the university community. During the program year, Jumpstart Mankato offers up to 40 excited Corps members the opporutnity to serve at early education centers in Mankato. Those individuals commit to serving 300 hours in their community.
Before setting foot in a pre-school, Corps members are trained in how to work with pre-school aged children and how to implement our curriculum. Throughout the year, members improve their skills through an ongoing service-learning and training.
Members may receive their Federal Work-Study funds for serving in Jumpstart. Members also receive an educational award when they are finished with their service. That award can be used to pay for further higher education or they can be used to pay back qualified student loans.
