Liz Miller Biography
Douglas Moore Lecturer, College of Arts and Humanities, Minnesota State University, Mankato

lMillerLiz Miller lives and works in Good Thunder, MN. She is Associate Professor of Drawing/Foundations at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Miller is a recipient of the Douglas R. Moore Faculty Research Award for her presentation “Drawing Beyond the Line,” an investigation into the evolution of contemporary drawing. Miller holds a BFA from Rhode Island Design and an MFA from the University of Minnesota. Her large-scale, mixed-media installations and works on paper have been featured in solo and group exhibitions regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Miller’s work is inspired by both the unknown and visual source material she describes as both beautiful and deadly. Her installations playfully tamper with viewers’ perceptions, for example, allowing invasive species forms to take on alluring, repetitive patterns.

Miller is starting new research that will focus on the beauty, danger and deception present in circus imagery. In a separate project, she will use research into collaborative drawing initiatives to design a course project for fall 2013 at Minnesota State, Mankato. The latter was inspired by a desire to understand current trends in contemporary drawing practice, particularly ideas based on intensive collaboration. Liz enjoys surprising her students with their own artistic capabilities, and using innovation to encourage excitement in teaching. She is currently preparing for a series of exhibitions around the country.
