Hi Stephanie, I’m grateful to you for taking the time to read and respond to my article. Having communicated with hundreds of persons who stutter (PWS) during the past eight years, I have observed that many appear to possess useful writing skills. Being able to express oneself via the written word can be so liberating for someone who experiences difficulties when speaking. Throughout my life, I could never use the words of my choice in oral situations. It was immensely frustrating having to settle for second best – I felt cheated. Conversely, when I put pen to paper, I felt like a king. :-) Today, I write and speak in abundance - my vocal cords and keyboard are constantly in use. :-) During recent years, I have come into contact (via the program and international support network to which I belong) with many, many PWS who are now living full and meaningful lives. They are encouraged to constantly expand their comfort zones in order overcome fears - thereby challenging their self-limiting beliefs, widening their self-image, and attaining personal growth. In common with me, many have also ventured into the world of public speaking and/or have sampled the exciting challenge of acting. They no longer allow their stutter to dictate the manner in which they live their lives. From a personal perspective, I enjoy a busy social life that enables me to regularly come in to contact with others, thereby further developing my interpersonal skills. Thank you, once again, for your interest. Kindest regards Alan
