Hello, This is what I came in contact with when I first began consulting on highschool age Downs students. They can get to this level of severity with many secondary behaviors that are no longer working for them. You need to talk about stuttering with Mandy because she has a lot of SHAME preSent. The fact that she would NOT talk about therapy is telling you a whole lot. I would use the SFA DVD about Kids Who Stutter. I don't have the exact title here in froNt of me but it is the one made at Purdue with Bill Murphy and has the bouncing basketball. Watch that with her. Kids stutter on that DVD and then ask her about her stuttering. What does she do ? One or two comments are all that you need. Then you can lead into the ideaS that IT'S NOT HER FAULT. IT JUST HAPPENS. IT'S OK TO STUTTER. Get her to start to talk about STUTTERING to you, her family, and her teachers. Contact me at jjjudithe@msn.com and I will send you a Stuttering Survey Form from SSMP. You do the Surveys first and stutter ! Getting her stuttering out into the open and encouraging her to talk everywhere (pragmatically appropriate) will greatly aid her fluency. Thank you. Judith
