Hello, In talking with Downs parents, you educate them in the same way that you would educate parents of normally developing children who stutter. I always tell parents the "It's nobody's fault that your child stutters. It just happens." Then you can give fluency enhancement suggestions such as slowing their rate of speech and using more pause time. In addition, use of the SFA DVD HELP FOR PARENTS is very helpful and can be watched with them. When trying to talk to a Downs child about stuttering, I usually use the words "Bumps in their Speech" and "It's OK to have Bumps". The word "stuttering" may be too abstract. Thank you. Judith
