Hello, my name is Tyra and I am a graduate student in speech-language pathology. I am currently enrolled in a fluency disorders class and we have learned that when children stutter it helps them to talk to their peers about stuttering. We have learned that many times young children who do not stutter do not know much about stuttering, but when those children who do stutter are able to teach children about stuttering it makes them feel more confident about their speech. You mentioned in your article that it is really important to reduce the “shame of stuttering” in children with Down’s. I was wondering if you think this technique (of teaching children about stuttering) would be helpful for those Down’s children who stutter. Do you think it would help in making them more confident in their speech? I realize that many times a child with Down’s would not have the vocabulary to teach about stuttering; do you think those children would find it beneficial to have the SLP do an in classroom lesson to all the children about stuttering? Thank you in advance for reading and responding to my questions, I look forward to hearing from you!
