Hi Judith. I am a graduate student at the college of St. Rose currently enrolled in a Fluency Disorders class. In class we often talk about the shame and guilt that is associated with stuttering. I am wondering how you separate the avoidance characteristics of stuttering from general characteristics of a child with a developmental disability? What I mean is, how do you know that the lack of eye contact, not wanting to answer questions, feelings of guilt and shame for example, are present due to a fluency disorder rather than a developmental disorder? Do you use a specific assessment method to understand what disorder is causing the children to use avoidance behaviors? Thank you in advanced for answering my questions.
