While reading your article, I thought about the importance of counseling when working with someone who stutters. Research suggests that a holistic approach to stuttering treatment is most likely to ensure that an individual maintains long term fluency (Bloom and Cooperman, 1999). In addition to promoting the use of fluency facilitating techniques, a clinician should always consider their client's feelings and attitudes during treatment. Counseling is often an essential part of the treatment process. If we are working with someone who meets the criteria for your definition of stuttered speech syndrome, would you consider their counseling needs to go above and beyond a speech-language pathologist's scope of practice?
