I have had the pleasant experience of working with adolescents who stutter. While most of the therapy went well, there was this one person who completely rejected everything I, or anyone else said. He would have a comment for everything. I was trying to explain to him about avoidance and escape behaviors, etc. and thought this analogy may be useful. Then I thought about what he might say. I feel as though, he would say, "Well I would break the record for holding the grapefruit the longest." Do you have any suggestions on how to explain this analogy decreasing the margin for comments like this one from a teenage boy? Thank you.
