Thanks for your comments and question… If you are lucky enough to have access to parents I would definitely try to get them involved in some of the sessions. (School-based clinicians do not always have that luxury!) Often times introducing a concept to the child (making sure the child is old enough to understand the concepts presented) while the parents are present is sufficient. There are times when the child is too young to discuss avoidance with an analogy such as this. (You can still work on avoidance goals with younger kids through various desensitization activities (especially pseudostuttering), but might not want to address it directly with the child via this analogy at that point.) In those situations, I would use the analogy to explain to the parents why desensitizing a child can be so important – to help them learn to not avoid stuttering in the first place.
