Fatemah, you asked: Does being bilingual contribute to the onset of stuttering? Are bilinguals assessed differently than monolinguals? Does the clinician have to assess both languages in order to come to a diagnostic decision? - - - - - I do not know of evidence correlating bilingualism with stuttering onset. Bilingual people are assessed the same way as monolingual people, but hopefully in two or more of the languages they may speak. Sometimes that is not possible. We do what we can. If needed, we can make a diagnostic decision about stuttering, based on one language. Remember that stuttering is a speech disorder, not a language disorder. Information about fluency in other languages the client may speak is certainly helpful, but it may not always be as readily available as we would like. BH
