We are currently locating samples of cluttered speech of varying severity as a means to perceptually "anchor" the rating scale on a continuum of severity. This "anchoring" may be analogous to a Likert-like scale where "1" is identified as "mild," "3" is identified as "moderately severem," etc. As cluttering is not completely captured using discrete counts on a single dimension (e.g., frequency count of disfluencies), a perceptual assessment tool may be more efficacious at least for clinical purposes.
