I apologize for posting the above message (on speaking rate and cluttering) before identifying myself. This is Florence Myers and I have been working with Ken for the past 20+ years and Klaas and Larry for the past 10 years to fathom this complex and MULTIDIMENSIONAL disorder. I wanted to share one further thought, that we need to consider whether cluttering can be captured only by measuring discrete behaviors in isolation. For example, % syllables disfluent per se (or syllables per minute) may not distinguish cluttered from noncluttered speech. There may be an interaction effect (dissynergy and dissynchrony) among the strands of cluttered behaviors. In the end, at least for clinical purposes, cluttering may best be considered as a perceptual phenonmonon. I am working with Klaas on refinement of the Cluttering Severity Instrument, which is a largely perceptual instrument.
