Language production and language problems are very interesting points in cluttering. When speech rate is too fast, language production is under stress, especially when the topic is new or complicated to the speaker. In the research projects we did (Van Zaalen et al., 2009a,b,d) we looked at the possibility of language production disorders and did not find them. But..... there were very interesting observations, some PWC were not able to speak in full and syntactically correct sentences, while they were able to write in perfect syntactical and complex sentences. Because speech and writing are two outcomes of the same speechlanguage system, you can not conclude based on the overt speech, that a person has problems in language production when language production in writing is free of errors. Another part of language consideres phonological encoding. Some PWC do experience problems in syllable sequencing or syllabe order. But not always. These problems arise when the speech rate is too fast for the linguistic demands of that moment. To clarify it in another way: a person can be able to produce the word "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" when he or she can choose their own speed, while in the speed of conversation a word like "multiprofessional" can be too difficult to pronounce. PWC recognize the complexity of the word, but are not capable of adjusting their speech rate to the complexity of the utterance during speech, resulting in moments of overcoarticulation. It is very important to stress out again that most language tests do not have time limits. PWC can score within normal limits on these tests, while they experience sentence structure errors at the same time. When errors in PWC diminish in slower speech rate, that can be an indication of inadequate speech adjustment on the one hand and problems in language automatisation on the other hand.
