Hi Mrs. Carla Di Domenicantonio
, I wanted to comment on your experience with “David” and the path of therapy you chose. I loved the idea of video taping the session and letting David watch the speech session so that he could see himself in a different light. I can only imagine the pressure you were under because you understand that David didn’t want to change. David liked the fact that he spoke fast because it made him different. Therefore, on top of your Speech-Language Pathologist duties you had to motivate or change David’s view to progress in therapy. A task that is extremely hard but I felt your approach was perfect. The video was the first step to enlighten David and the letter, the goals, and parental involvement was perfect. I think it’s amazing how you connected with David and still made his goal in the end attainable. Thanks for that wonderful idea and for trying different outlets like video usage and the mailing of the letters. As a student, I feel that examples like these give me hope to try different things even if they work or don’t work. The final letter that David mailed to himself was definitely an inspiration and reminder to maintain his speech. Thank you for your wonderful experience and for sharing that so that other can learn from this.
