Thank you for your interest in my "nugget," Nicole. David had disfluent speech but he did not stutter (i.e., there were no blocks or sound prolongations). Had he stuttered in addition to everything else, I probably would have started with fluency therapy. In this case, because rate was an issue, I might have use prolonged speech (or a slightly slower rate) and pausing to slow him down. I would have expected the intelligibility issue to be addressed by the slower pace; however, beaver talk would have required its own intervention. However, I think that trying out a Lidcombe approach with him would have been interesting. Starting with structured situations targeting short responses, I might have been able to target bilabial sounds through my choice of stimuli and thus "corrected" the beaver talk. What do you think?
