Hi, Danielle - Thank you for your comments and question. I don't think I would have used video with a 5 year old. A 5 year old is unlikely to have had previous therapy and may not have the social maturity, observational skills or insight that an older child might have. We don't typically expect a 5 year old to take responsibility for change - we involve the parent to support change. I probably would have used a different approach if I had seen David at the age of 5. I perhaps would have used more traditional articulation therapy as a starting point to get the lips involved in bilabial sounds. I might have modelled a slower rate of speech. His mother would definitely have been involved in the therapy. There is no set way to approach any of our clients and we need to be prepared to change strategy at any point. The approach would probably be different depending on each client. Do you think it would be appropriate to use video with a 5 year old? Best wishes, Carla.
