Hi Corrine, Thanks for your question. I do think if you client might not know what the facial expressions mean, that is where you will need to begin working. Many of my clients know what the looks mean, they just haven't been tuned in to looking for them. A fun way to identify different types of facial expressions is through taking turns making them together, perhaps while looking in the mirror together, so if needed, the client can imitate your expressions. You can also take pictures of the client and/or their friends/family members making different facial expressions and practice identifying facial expressions. Then you can move to identifying different expressions in others in movies, magazines, etc, and trying to guess what they might mean. You can talk about alternate possibilities for each expression, since we are really making an educated guess about what the expressions we see represent. I would also really focus on the expressions related to communication breakdown...e.g. confused, bored (maybe you are giving too many details), etc. Hope it helps.
