Kelly, Excellent question. My feeling is that individual speech sounds are often addressed initially since cluttering isn't identified, and it is thought that speech intelligibility will improve when the child has acquired more speech sounds. That makes sense, as it often works that way for many children who have speech problems. With a child who has some symptoms of cluttering, it may not work out, as we saw for Claudia. This suggests to me that it is really important to learn more about cluttering, in general, and then to begin to sort out the symptoms of cluttering that appear early in life, so that children who might benefit from addressing the regulation of their speaking rate or timing can be identified early.
