Lisa, I'm glad you found the article to be helpful. And, thanks for your good questions. One way to define self-regulation is to think of it as the ability of individuals to self monitor and modulate their thoughts and actions in order to function effectively in daily life. For example, you adjust the speed at which you walk to the table with an overfull cup, when you notice that it may slosh out over the edge; you shift your weight a bit to balance yourself when you are carrying a heavy load, etc. In speaking, we self-regulate to choose words, plan the order in which we will say things, and monitor our speech so that we are clear, making little adjustments as needed. We don't always do this with high awareness, but we all do it to some extent. Regarding Claudia's treatment, she is currently attending a private school that does not have an SLP serving the students, which is why she currently is not in therapy at school.
