I was absolutely amazed to read this article. The stories presented within were truly heartwrenching. I think that the with the continued work of the dedicated people named within the article, the situation will improve. As become aware of stuttering, there will undoubtledly be some negative responses. Hopefully, with continued education though, about the truth about stuttering as a communication disorder, these negative responses will be turned around. Unfortunately, before such issues can be dealt with in a positive manner, there is often a period of negative reactions, ignorance, and turmoil for those dealing first hand with stuttering. Though it may seem far-fetched, the situation described here reminds me of a time in America where autism was believed by many to be caused by "refrigerator mothers." This period of unfortunate ignorance did lead to a more constructive outlook on etiology and treatment. Hopefully with continued work, similar changes can be made in China, and other countries in a similar situation regarding the treatment of stuttering.
