You’re right -- job interviews, public speaking, etc., are scary situations for all people, but for stutterers, they can be much more of a daunting experience! I am happy in my position mainly because of the work that I’m doing. I’m drawing on my research and evaluation experience and I enjoy the content of what we do. But I think I feel especially comfortable in my job because of the nature of what we do and the fact that over half of my colleagues have a known disability. I feel comfortable about stuttering around them – at least the ones that I’ve been open about my stuttering with. I haven’t discussed it with the top leaders, and I slip back into my covert behaviors around them. So I don’t think that I would feel as comfortable in other jobs settings. However, I think that if I were to leave my current position and work outside of the disability field, I would approach things differently than I have in the past. In fact, I’ve already started disclosing my speech more and more, including to the classes that I teach outside of work. So it’s already had a direct impact on my approach to my stuttering and has made me much more comfortable with it. Thanks for your post!
