By following the "Regression-Progression Hypothesis" (Jerry Halvorson), I have learned that my students fare better when their parents and other significant family members do not react to the child's normal speech errors. By reducing their interruptions and questioning behavior, the "significant listeners" can provide the child with the best environment that will permit them to continue to communicate despite having some very normal "speech errors". I have also found it important to ask why it's so important to them to expect their child to achieve normal adult speech patterns when the child is still developing.
