Bonnie, thanks for writing. I agree that the Dear Abby activity “helps people to feel anonymous.” I like how you said that! I have never worked with a school-age child who would not participate in this activity. Some students enjoy this activity more than other students, but that will be true with any activity. In therapy, I am a big fan of “cutting my losses.” If any activity proves to be unproductive, I generally just move on and attempt to meet my student’s goals with a different activity. As an aside, it has been my experience that the more comfortable the clinician is with facilitating an activity, the more comfortable students are in participating in the activity.
