Good questions Judy. I have used this model with preschool through adult clients. There really isn't any age limit for using the model. You simply have to know what levels are appropriate for the age level you are working with. It works well for preschoolers and school-age children. Older children and adults can work primarily at a decontextualized level but the discourse and semantic levels of the conversations that take place in therapy could be manipulated by the clinician. Manipulation of the three levels of the SDS model takes some planning each time you interact with the client. I find it hard to generate systematic changes without some planning. So, that's why I ask teachers and parents to think about the where they are on the model when interacting with the child who stutters but recognize that their level of understanding will be limited to the level of contextualization and the semantic levels. I simply ask teachers and parents to be aware of those two things as they interact with the child.
