For those interested in becoming Qualified Neutrals under Minnesota Rule 114
Learn the causes of conflict and mediator tools and strategies for effective dispute resolution through discussion, demonstration, participation, self-evaluation and assistance from experienced coaches. Participants will learn mediation skills to facilitate creative, collaborative processes in assisting individuals and groups in employing productive solutions to disputes and problems. This thirty-hour course conducted over four days focuses on mediation skills development.

This course is designed for people of all professional backgrounds who wish to enhance their dispute resolution skills.
- Managers, educators, counselors and ministers, public employees, health care professionals, therapists, human resource personnel, insurance claims representatives, as well as attorneys and judges may incorporate new skills into their lives and jobs.
- Anyone looking for an opportunity to learn new skills and develop a new career path.
- This course is also designed for those who may wish to establish themselves as professional mediators or as Qualified Neutrals under Minnesota Rule 114.
This course is designed to:
- Introduce participants to the underlying causes of conflict
- Approaches to understanding each disputant’s interpretation of the roots of the dispute
- Communications skills involved in a mediator’s assistance in the resolution of a dispute
- Working through a conflict
- Finalizing an agreement to a conflict
Participants may use these skills in their workplace or may set up their own Dispute Resolution practice.
This course meets the Minnesota Supreme Court 30-hour Civil Mediation requirements for those interested entering their names on the Minnesota Qualified Neutral Roster. One does not have to be an attorney to be on this list and the course is open to professionals who are not attorneys, as as well attorneys.

Helen B. Preddy
Ms. Preddy is an attorney practicing in Minnesota. She is the President and CEO of U.S. Arbitration and Mediation of Minnesota, Inc., where she is a mediator both in Minnesota and throughout the United States. She received her J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, MN. She received her mediation training and advanced work from CDR in Boulder, Colorado and the Harvard Negotiation Project in Cambridge, MA. Since 1988, she has been mediating for federal and state courts, as well as private corporations and individuals. In 2005 Ms. Preddy was appointed by the Bankruptcy Court in Portland, Oregon as one of four mediators to work on the Archdiocese of Portland sex abuse cases. Helen conducts Alternative Dispute Resolution seminars both in Minnesota and throughout the country, facilitating workshops for institutions of higher learning, government employees, corporate professionals and members of the legal and health care professions. Ms. Preddy enjoys working with complex issues, assisting parties in understanding the implications of their decisions as they work toward resolution.
Janeen L. Massaros
Ms. Massaros brings her experience and insights as a mediator, facilitator, parenting time expeditor, custody evaluator, and professional trainer to her work in the field of alternative dispute resolution. As sole proprietor of Southern Metropolitan Mediation Services since 1996, she assists individuals to resolve issues related to dissolution, co-parenting, post-divorce shared parenting concerns and property distribution. She also provides mediation and training services to businesses, supervisors, human resource professionals and employee assistance programs to resolve workplace disputes regarding job performance and expectations, co-worker relationships, multi-party organizational conflict and communication.
