Custodial Services and Cleaning Response
Custodial services are being implemented, including routine cleaning of work surfaces, equipment, tools and machinery, vehicles and areas in the campus environment, including classrooms, labs, restrooms, common areas, break rooms, lunch rooms, meeting rooms, and drop-off and pick-up locations.
Frequent cleaning will be conducted in high-touch areas, such as phones, keyboards, touch screens, controls, door handles, elevator panels, railings, printers and copy machines, credit card readers, delivery equipment, etc.
Building Services will clean campus spaces once per day in accordance with CDC guidelines. High-touch surfaces in all public spaces with be cleaned at least once a day. Examples of high-touch surfaces include: pens, counters, shopping carts, tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, stair rails, elevator buttons, desks, keyboards, phones, toilets, faucets, and sinks. Staffing levels will be maintained to meet this commitment and include a contingency plan to cover absenteeism due to illness. CDC approved quaternary disinfectant will be applied when sanitizing.
Faculty, staff, students and visitors will be responsible for cleaning personal workspaces such as computer keyboards, phones, desks, tables and other high touch surfaces.
Building Services will provide an initial startup supply of disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer and paper towels. Once initial supplies are exhausted, departments will have the option to purchase additional supplies through campus stores to be delivered or arranged to be picked-up.

Areas assigned to a person who tested positive within the last 24 hours will be cleaned and disinfected.
When a student, faculty, or staff member becomes ill with suspect COVID-19 on campus
General precautions for common spaces (classrooms, offices, public spaces)
When someone on campus develops any symptoms of illness consistent with COVID-19 (e.g., fever, cough, or shortness of breath):
- Send the person home or back to their dorm room, apartment, home, or other accommodation.
- Ensure the person has easy access to hygiene supplies, including facial tissues and alcohol-based hand rub in case an individual becomes ill in a public space.
General precautions for cleaning staff
As long as routine cleaning and disinfecting have taken place regularly, additional cleaning and disinfecting is likely not necessary. The following are general precautions for cleaning staff given that community transmission of COVID-19 is occurring:
- While cleaning, and until a person can wash hands after cleaning, staff should not touch their face.
- Cleaning staff should wear uniforms (or designated work clothes) and disposable gloves when cleaning and handling trash. Cleaning staff should change clothes at the end of a shift. It may be helpful for them to keep a change of clothes at work.
- Clothing worn while cleaning should be placed in a plastic bag until they can be laundered. Laundering should be done as soon as possible and can be done safely at home.
- Cleaning staff should thoroughly wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after gloves are removed.
- Staff who are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting should be trained to use disinfectants safely and effectively and to safely clean up potentially infectious materials and body fluids – blood, vomit, feces, and urine.
- All cleaning staff should be trained on the hazards of the cleaning chemicals used in the workplace in accordance with OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200.
Specific Instructions for entering a COVID positive space
When asked to enter a COVID+ or suspected COVID+ space, current guidance for all Minnesota State Mankato employees including (but not limited to) General Maintenance Worker (GMW), General Repair Worker (GRW) or other trades persons, Campus Security etc. shall follow guidance provided by Minnesota Department of Health.
- When feasible, a supervisor should determine if we can wait to enter the room if/when COVID+ student is not present
- If the student is unable to leave, a second goal will be to ask the student go in to another room/close the door while we are working in another part of the space if possible
- IF neither are feasible, then we'd want to assure:
- Student wears a face covering
- Staff should wear a surgical mask (non-95) and eye protection (safety glasses with side shields, goggles or face shield are acceptable)
- If feasible, have the occupant clean/disinfect surfaces to be worked on, prior to our employees entering (not required of occupant, but will be requested)
- For all activities in a COVID+ or suspected COVID+ space .....
- Employee should wash/sanitize their hands prior to entering and after exiting the space
- Employees should utilize standard PPE for the tasks they are completing. (i.e .... gloves for using cleaning chemicals, safety glasses or goggles for eye impacts or splashes)
- Employees who have been designated to clean a space as part of a COVID+ response, if they do not have access to a disposable coat/covering, Clothing worn while cleaning should be placed in a plastic bag until they can be laundered. Laundering should be done as soon as possible and can be done safely at home.
- Employees who have completed routine or maintenance type work in COVID+ spaces should launder their work clothes, at home, at the end of their work shift using standard laundering practices.
As with these and any other aspect of campus activities, everyone should always continue to:
- Maintain social distancing
- Wearing of face coverings when you cannot be assured of proper social distancing
- Covering your cough/sneeze with your arm/elbow
- Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Washing your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds or utilizing hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
The University has delivered boxes of supplies to offices across campus. Once your supplies in the box have become depleted, you may order more from Facilities.
Please take a look at what is in the box and take a conservative approach to only ordering what you truly need from the website. This to insure we have adequate supplies for all at the beginning of the semester.
Please note: face shields for faculty will be provided directly by Academic Affairs through the Colleges. Do not order face shields for FlexSync classroom instruction through this website. This website can be used for face shield requests other than faculty FlexSync instruction.
3m 41 Disinfecting Product

Disinfecting vs. Sanitizing
Sanitizing is using a disinfectant to reduce the level of germs on a surface.
Disinfection is using a disinfectant per the manufacture's guidelines to destroy all germs on a surface. The distinction is usually the amount of time (dwell time) the product is allowed to remain in contact with the surface.
Five Minute Dwell Time
The 3M 41 product we have provided all departments to use as a disinfectant has a dwell time of five minutes. If you let the product sit for the full five minutes before wiping up, the surface will be fully disinfected. If the product does not sit for the full five minutes, the surface will be sanitized but not fully disinfected. This may have destroyed a very high percentage of the germs, but not 100%.
If you can’t wait around for the full five minutes to wipe up the residual, it is ok to let the product dry on its own. This may leave a mark or residue which can be cleaned later.
Electronic Device Cleaning
Do not spray the 3M 41 product directly on electronic devices. Instead, spray it onto a disposable towel and use the moist towel on to clean your devices.
If you read the label of the product that was delivered to offices, you will see several warnings that may alarm you. However, the bottles that were prepared and delivered to offices are very safe—they are a diluted form of the product listed as "ready to use". The US EPA governs labeling and creates confusion with warnings being included for the concentrated form of the product.

COVID 19 Ventilation Operations
Minnesota State Mankato is following the CDC/ASHRAE recommendations for HVAC operations and have implemented the following operational changes:
- Upgraded filtration to the CDC/ASHRAE COVID mitigation standard of MERV 13 or better.
- Programed extended run/purge time for 2 additional hours before and after the building occupied schedule.
- Increased outdoor air rates to maximum the system can provide without causing other ventilation problems.*
*Note that when outdoor air is between approximately 50 to 70 degrees we can operate at 100% outside air. Outdoor air level is adjusted as needed when the temperature is above or below these temperatures to prevent damage to the system or cause temperature/humidity issues in the building.
