The graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language prepares candidates for careers in teaching English as a second or foreign language to adult learners in U.S. and international contexts.
Certificate Requirements: 24 credits + Language Requirement
Language Requirement: all TESL degree candidates must fulfill a language requirement.
Candidates who are native speakers of English must have a minimum of two consecutive semesters of the same foreign language at the college level (or the equivalent). This foreign language requirement may be met in residence, but courses taken to fulfill it will not count toward the degree.
Candidates whose native language is not English must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the Internet based-test to enter the program. Anyone with a score below 575/89 will be asked to take skill-based English-placement tests upon arrival to determine whether additional ESL courses are required. No Capstone Project is required for the Graduate Certificate
