Intro to Pages and Blocks

Episerver uses two types of foundational pieces to build content, pages and blocks. We have several templates - or page types - and blocks available for you to use. Sometimes this can be confusing when first getting started. Think of pages as the foundation, each webpage you build you will choose a certain page type and then on the page you may or may not be able to add additional blocks to the page. Some pages require blocks, some don't. Read on to learn more about the most basic and commonly used page types and best practices. 

Pages, Common Types

The two most common webpages are the section page and the standard page.

Standard pages are the most commonly used webpages and act as a blank canvas for informational content. They have WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor as the main content creation area. 

Section pages are the second most commonly used page type and serve as a great showcase page. Some examples of this page type are the home pages for each college.

Section pages are made up entirely of blocks and have no inherent WYSIWYG editor like the standard page type. These pages are meant to be overviews of the website instead of informative. Therefore, most items on these pages will be more navigational in nature than informative.

Blocks on section pages should always follow the following format:

1. Carousel block
2. Section block
3. Call to action block (can be purple or gold).
4. Optional second call to action block (if a second call to action block is used, the first should be purple and the second should be gold).
5. Other content as needed.
