On March 21st, 2013, Information & Technology Services started using Microsoft Office 365 to deliver the MavMAIL service to alumni.

Microsoft Office 365 is a fully-featured e-mail service with anti-spam filtering, integrated calendaring, notes, and task management.

Access is available from the web, Windows or Macintosh computers, mobile devices (Android, Apple iOS, Blackberry, others) and also via POP or IMAP.

Comparisons between MavMAIL for alumni vs. students, faculty & staff

  • Logos and titles for this service will be “Office 365” rather than “MavMAIL.”
  • Email storage will be increased to 5GB.
  • The web access continues as before at http://www.mnsu.edu/its/mavmail/. The interface remains very similar to the MavMAIL you used as a student.

Alumni MavMAIL / Office 365 Setup

Outlook 2010 or 2013

This is originally from the Microsoft article at http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/dd253202.aspx.

  1. Open Outlook 2010.
    • If the Microsoft Outlook 2010 Startup wizard displays automatically, on the first page of the wizard, click Next. Then, on the E-mail Accounts page of the wizard, click Next again to set up an e-mail account.
    • If the Microsoft Outlook 2010 Startup wizard doesn't appear, on the Outlook 2010 toolbar, click the File tab. Then, just above the 'Account Settings' button, click 'Add Account'.
  2. If the settings on the 'Auto Account Setup' page aren't filled in or aren't correct, consider the following as you correct the settings:
    • If the settings on the 'Auto Account Setup' page aren't filled in for you, type the correct settings based on the information that was provided to you by the person who manages your e-mail account.
    • If the name in the 'Your Name' box isn't correct, you may need to reset the options on the 'Auto Account Setup' page before you can edit your name. To reset the options, click the option button next to 'Manually configure server settings' or 'additional server types', and then click the option button next to 'E-Mail Account.'
  3. After you click 'Next' on the 'Auto Account Setup' page of the wizard, Outlook will perform an online search to find your e-mail server settings. You'll be prompted to enter your user name and password during this search. Make sure that you enter your firstname.lastname@mnsu.edu as your user name.
  4. You know you've been successful when you receive: "Your e-mail account is successfully configured." Click 'Finish.'
However, if Outlook isn't able to set up your account at this time, continue (below) with "What else do I need to know?"

What else do I need to know?

If your e-mail account is the type that requires registration, you must register it the first time you sign in to Outlook Web App. Connecting to your e-mail account through Outlook will fail if you haven't registered your account through Outlook Web App. After you sign in to your account, sign out. Then try to connect using Outlook. For more information about how to sign in to your account using Outlook Web App, see How to Sign In to Outlook Web App. If you have trouble signing in, see FAQs: Sign-in and Password Issues or contact the person who manages your e-mail account.

If Auto Account Setup can't successfully connect you to your account, do one or more of the following: Wait a few minutes and try again.

If you need to connect to your e-mail account immediately, use a Web browser or an e-mail program that supports POP or IMAP to connect to your account using Outlook Web App. For information about how to connect using a Web browser, see How to Sign In to Outlook Web App. For information about how to connect using a POP or IMAP e-mail program, see Use IMAP or POP E-Mail Programs. If you know the name of the person who manages your mailbox (sometimes called an e-mail administrator), contact them and report the error you're getting when you try to connect with Outlook.
