Office 365 for students, faculty and staff

Microsoft Office 365 is a whole collection of applications and services, most of which are provided free to MSU faculty, staff and students.

For all Students, faculty and staff:

  • E-Mail: 100 GB of e-mail storage, calendaring, contacts, tasks and instant messaging all integrated with campus address books. E-mail can be read, composed and sent using any web browser or any favorite e-mail app. E-mail clients that use Active Sync can also be remotely wiped and secured in event the device is lost or stolen to prevent unauthorized access to messages.
  • OneDrive: 5 TB (5,000 GB) personal online file storage and online, real-time collaboration and editing of Microsoft Office documents. Documents can be shared with MSU clientele or anyone in the world providing read-only or editing capability.
  • Office Online Apps: Ability to create, edit, print, and share Office documents using any web browser on any device without the need to have Microsoft Office installed on the device. Many people can simultaneously read and edit any Online Office App and changes are displayed and saved in real time. Office apps provides a rich set of Office features to create and present documents, and if advanced capabilities are needed, the document can be opened in a full version of the Office app and saved to OneDrive.
  • Office On Demand: Streams MS Office application(s) to your computer without installing MS Office on that computer. Very useful if you want to work on an Office document on a computer, but the latest version isn't installed on it. When you close the MS Office application, it goes away since it's not installed on the computer.
  • Yammer: Collaborate, communicate and share information with class members and/or co-workers. Similar to Facebook, but is part of MSU and the MSU community.
  • Intranet Sites (SharePoint): provides online workspaces and even document workflow.
  • Teams: Provides chat, discussions, instant messaging, meetings, file space, and more.
  • Online Video Conferencing and broadcast (Skype for Business):
  • Security, compliance and privacy:

Formatting Options All File Formats Retained Working formats are limited when utilizing the web client only. Files can be downloaded to use locally stored programs.

  • Storage Space: MavDISK allows faculty and staff a maximum of 32 GB of storage space and 16 GB for students. OneDrive allows for 5 TB of storage for all current faculty, staff, and students.
  • Sharing of Files: Internal: MavDISK allows users to share files internally with everyone (using the public folder) or with just themselves (private folder). OneDrive allows users to share files and/or folders to anyone that they wish either by sharing with a link, sharing to everyone internally, or sharing via e-mail address(s).
  • Sharing of Files: External: MavDISK does not allow for external sharing of files or folders.
  • Group Folders: Group folders are created, allocated space, and managed by ITS in MavDISK. Within OneDrive, users are able to create their own group folders, inviting and removing people as they see fit.
  • Synchronous Collaboration: MavDISK does not allow multiple people to collaborate on a single document at the same time. OneDrive does allow for multiple people to collaborate on a single document at the same time.
  • Security: Both MavDISK and OneDrive are FERPA, HIPPA, and MN Data Privacy Act compliant.
  • Ease of Use/Intuitive Interface: While on a personal machine, it does take effort to access MavDISK by either mounting the drive or by going direct to the folder. While off of campus, a VPN connection is required. OneDrive can be accessed anywhere there is an Internet connection on any device.
  • Formatting Options: Because MavDISK is primarily a storage space, all files uploaded will retain their formatting. OneDrive will retain formatting, but is limited when utilizing the web client. Microsoft Office suite products will have the ability to be edited online, however other formats must first be downloaded before they can be edited.
