Many times webpages will have extra content below the menu on the left. This will commonly be a logo, link to social media, or an address/contact information. To the left here is an image from the Student Events Team Homepage of how they are using the space for a link to Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube.
Be conservative with content that you wish to include in this section!
The white backgrounded section of the page (i.e. where this text is) is where content is designed to go. The left column is for the menu and for minor additions. Placing other information over there can be easily missed and can unnecessarily extend your webpage length wise so that there would be blank white space here in the content area.
