SUCKERPUNCH (2011)
Directed by Zack Snyder
"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything"

Babydoll is sent to a mental institution by her twisted Stepfather, who has authorized the staff to perform a lobotomy on her. Time is ticking, so she hatches an elaborate escape plan with her fellow patients. The plot unfolds during a series of over-the-top action packed fantasy sequences with a killer soundtrack. Does their plan succeed? You're gonna have to attend the June Grind-Fu to find out!

Director Zack Snyder (known from such hits as THE SNYDER CUT) describes Suckerpunch as "Alice In Wonderland with machine guns", and that's not an unfair description. The fantasy sequences are elaborate and gorgeous, based in the real world, but what happens is entirely fantasy. Does that make sense? It sounds fancy. In any case, you'll get sucked in by how amplified this story is. To make things crazier, it was also supposed to be A MUSICAL. The unedited version (which we will not be screening) has the song and dance numbers restored, but the theatrical edit is a much stronger film.

This is all gibberish, isn't it? Heck. Come and see for yourself how crazy Suckerpunch is!

Overlord (2018)
Directed by Julius Avery

Overlord is more than the well deserved major league stomping of Nazis. It's a World War 2 mission movie full of crazy action, intrigue, and monsters. SO MANY MONSTERS. Allied soldiers are flown into Germany to take out a radio tower. The D Day invasion is depending on the success of this mission, and stakes are high. The soldiers came prepared, but they had no idea what was waiting for them in the fortified church where the tower is. Nobody knew about the horrors it hid. It was bad enough that they had to deal with Nazis, but this...

Overlord was produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company, so you may be surprised by the minimal use of lens flare. Bad Robot involvement implies a certain level of suspense and action, and you get that by the truckload, with an unhealthy dose of over-the-top gore. There's that phrase again: over-the-top. Everything about the June Grind-Fu Cinema is over the top!

Overlord is very rated R, and it is not recommended for younger viewers.

Don't forget, Grind-Fu Cinema is free! Join us on Saturday, June 25th at 7:00 p.m. in Wiecking 220 auditorium for a great night of movies. There's plenty of parking behind the building! For more information, e-mail us at shufflefunction@hotmail.com.
