The members of Twelve Girls Band are
classically trained, with backgrounds including the China Academy of
Music; the Chinese National Orchestra; and the Central Conservatory
of Music. They are skilled multi-instrumentalists performing on traditional
Chinese instruments including the zither-like gu zheng with adjustable
bridges, and as many as 25 strings, hammered dulcimer called a yang
qin; the erhu, which is a two-string violin; the pear-shaped, four-stringed
pipa lute; and the bamboo dizi and vertical xiao flutes. Electronic
keyboards and punctuating percussion add modern textures to span the
