Fairytale of New York
original Celtic Punks, the Pogues, first five albums were recently
reissued. Last month I played the Pogues "Dirty Old Town,"
from the Global Rhythms sampler disc. That tune piqued my interest
so I stopped by Tune Town, our local campus record shop, and purchased
a copy of the Pogues" If I Should Fall From Grace with God."
I was blown-away by their powerful and beautifully crafted song "Fairytale
of New York."

Smithsonian Folkways just released
a recording by Iraqi oud master, Rahim Alhaj accompanied by percussionist,
Souhail Kaspar. Their music harkens back to the golden age of the
oud, from the Abbasid period (750-1258). Musical instruments have
an extremely long heritage in Iraq. An image of a woman playing a
lute, similar to an oud, is depicted on a Sumerian clay seal from
the prehistoric city of Uruk, date back to (4500-3100 B.C.)

Twenty-four year old, Madrid native,
Rayito comes from a musical family. His father is a Flamenco guitar
player. At age 14 Rayito moved with his family to Miami where he went
to school at New World School of the Arts. Rayito has already had
opportunities to collaborate with an amazing line-up of partners,
including Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Paco de Lucia, Julio
Iglesias, Paulina Rubio, Ricky Martin. Rayito's debut cd recieved
three Latin Grammy Nominations.

Veteran reggae artist Rob Symeonn's "Chosen
One" is fulled with the righteous rastaman vibrations, blending
roots riddims with sweet, smoky vocals and an uplifting message.
Music from the vast expanses of the Sahara desert by the
Tuareg band, Tartit. The group consists of five women and four men
who reside in the Timbuktu region of Mali. They play hypnotic trance-inducing
music: the women sitdown and sing and play cyclic rhythms on their
tinde drums while the men sing and play acoustic and electric guitars.
